Miscellaneous

This chapter contains info on some odds and ends that end up in my pack, but that do not really merit a chapter of their own. Usually because they do not weigh much or because they are personal preferences that others may do without. Or because they are not always brought, depending on circumstances.

Bears are pretty common in the Nordic countries nowadays. They have never bothered any hikers, to my knowledge, and there is no need to fear them or store your food in any other way than in your tent. For backpackers in the US and Canada it is a different ball game. In many areas, American bears are people habituated. The Sierra bears are supposed to be particularly entrepreneurial.
If you check out Youtube you can find excellent films on the PCT technique, which is the one I use for bearbagging.  It only requires me to bring the stuff you see on the photo above. I put my food inside the waterproof stuff sack normally used for my sleeping bag. I fill the tiny bag used for my tent pegs with some rocks and use this weight to throw the line over a bough or one of those beams that many prepared campsites in the US and Canada have. So I only need the line and a really light carabiner. The bobbin weighs a few grams and saves a lot of hard words by keepin the line in order. Especially if it is dark. And especially if it is also hailing and raining, which happened to me in Yellowstone NP not so long ago.

Other odds and ends you will usually find in my Miscellaneous department include comb, writing paper, tickets and money, sunscreen and emergency whistle.
