My favourite 'wet' socks are also known as 'ladies socks'. 50-60 denier nylon ankle socks that weigh around 18 grams (2/3 oz).
These are an example of 'dry' socks; wool or synthetics, that are only used in the tent and in the sleeping bag and meant to be kept dry at all times.
The 'warm' socks are often pile (above right) or fleece, as these seem less compressible when used under a waterproof sock (above left). The synthetics also dry faster.
Comments and current insights: The system with wet, warm and dry socks has sort of evolved by itself during a five-year period. It took me a while to analyse what I was doing and put virtual labels on the socks. More on how this works in the field is found in the chapter Footwear.
